Last Sunday gospel readings centered around Saint Matthews recount of the Sermon on the Mount. Here is part of it: “Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No';. “ In more common terms, a man’s word is his bond. I admit this a bit heavy for a Knights of Columbus meeting but is it really? I think it’s good for everyone to reflect on this and apply it consistently every day. From contractors to politicians to friends, we are never really surprised these day when a yes turns to no. As Knights of Columbus let us not participate the decay of our times but rather lead by our good example.
We will open with a prayer from Mother Teresa of Calcutta:
The fruit of silence is Prayer.
The fruit of Prayer is Faith.
The fruit of Faith is Love.
The fruit of Love is Service.
Lord, open our eyes that we may see you in our brothers and sisters. Lord, open our ears, that we may hear the cries of the hungry, the cold, the frightend, the oppressed. Lord, open our hearts, that we may love each other as you love us. Renew in us your Spirit. Lord free us and make us one. Show us how we can serve you in the least of my brothers and sisters. Amen.
