Fish Fry
The Knights of Columbus Saints Cosmas and Damien Council #13341 held its annual Lenten Fish Fry on six (6) consecutive Fridays, from 4:30 pm- 7:00 pm, beginning February 16th, 2024, and ending March 22nd, 2024. Preparations for the event, which included meetings and shopping for supplies, began in mid-January. Activities during the week to prepare for each Friday included food shopping, kitchen cleaning, and deep fryer cleaning every Monday, fish and other food preparation on Thursday, and any required last-minute shopping on Friday mornings prior to the event later in the day.
The menu consisted of fried fish, baked fish, French fries, coleslaw, and green beans. The cost per meal was $16.00/ $8.00 for children under 12. Water, lemonade, iced tea, and coffee were served free of charge. Beer, wine, and soda were available for purchase at an additional cost. The OLA Women’s Guild was also present and sold their own desserts at an additional cost.
To properly run each weekly event a minimum of thirty (30) volunteers were required each day. Volunteers were broken up into teams, were required to arrive at specific times, and executed specific tasks. Teams included kitchen set-up, cooking, dining room set-up, cashiers and greeters, food servers, beverage servers, table cleaners and setters, dishwashers, kitchen cleaners, and a dining room cleanup/ room breakdown crew.
A total of 1008 meals were served over the course of six (6) nights. A total of fifty-four (54) Brother Knights and ten (10) Others participated in the event from start to finish.
